1970 Dodge Challenger R/T
In 1970, SCCA rules required Dodge to produce and sell street versions of its track car. Dodge answered with the Challenger T/A. Road-going T/A models were equipped exclusively with a 340-cubi-inch V-8 engine. “Six-Pack” carbureted versions were rated at 290 horsepower, while four-barrel models produced 275 horsepower. Air was fed through a functional hood scoop.
Chrysler Corporations two entries in the pony car market were the Barracuda and the Challenger. Although they shared the same platform, the Challenger rode on a 110-inch wheelbase- two inches longer than the Barracuda.
For this 1970 Challenger, Options included a Hurst-shifted four-speed transmission, a 3.90:1 rear axle ratio, and power steering. Front disc brakes were standard equipment on all Challengers at the time. Distinctive T/S features included side-exit exhaust, a fiberglass hood, and a rear-mounted antenna.
This particular car comes from a Challenger collection owned by Fred Gilmore of Lyons, Kansas. While his other Challengers are equally noteworthy, the Plum Crazy purple finish on this one makes it one of our favorites, with its fitting nod to Kansas State University.
