August and September can bring some of the year’s hottest driving days, even as hints of fall begin to appear. For classic car owners, that means there is still plenty of time to enjoy a cruise—but a little extra attention to heat is important. Before heading out, check the radiator, coolant level, hoses, belts, engine oil and other fluids. Make sure the radiator fins are clean and free of debris, and keep an eye out for any signs of leaks. Older cooling systems can be especially vulnerable when temperatures remain high, so taking care of small issues now can prevent bigger problems on the road.
While you’re driving, pay close attention to the temperature gauge. Stop-and-go traffic, parades, long waits at traffic lights and extended idling can put additional strain on a classic car’s cooling system. If the temperature starts climbing beyond its normal range, find a safe place to pull over and let the engine cool rather than risking an overheating problem. Never remove a radiator cap while the engine is hot, as pressurized coolant can cause serious burns. It is also wise to carry extra coolant or water and a few basic tools on longer outings.
Late-summer heat can be hard on more than just the engine. Whenever possible, park in the shade or a garage, and use a windshield sunshade to reduce the temperature inside the car. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can take a toll on dashboards, upholstery, rubber components and paint. Don’t forget the tires, either. Hot pavement and extended exposure to the sun can accelerate tire aging, so check tire pressure and inspect for cracks or other signs of deterioration before heading out.
The good news is that August and September still offer some of the best opportunities of the year to enjoy a classic car. Consider planning your drives for early morning or early evening when temperatures are more comfortable, and take advantage of local cruise-ins, car shows and scenic back roads before the leaves begin to turn. With a little preparation and some attention to the heat, there is no reason to put your classic away just yet. Fall is coming—but there are still plenty of miles of summer left to enjoy!
