1948 Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon “Woodie”
This Ford Super Deluxe eight passenger station wagon is one of 8,912 produced for the 1948 model year. 1948 would be the final year of many pre-war designs, and the last year that Ford built station wagon bodies that were entirely made of wood from the cowl back. Affectionately known today as “woodies” the wood bodies were built at the Ford Iron Mountain plant in upper Michigan using wood sourced from the company’s own forests. The were offered in two trim levels, Deluxe and Super Deluxe. The Super Deluxe included all the features of the Deluxe with the addition of a chrome horn ring, armrests for all doors, two sun visors and extra chrome trim. Two engines were available, a 226 CID inline six and 239 CID L-Head V-8. Woodie wagons became popular with surfing crowd in the 60s due to their roominess for surf boards, and relatively low cost at the time. Several music groups such as he Beach Boys and Jan and Dean immortalized these cars in songs such as “surf City” and “Surfer Girl.” Woodie wagons are highly collectable today with nice original or nicely restored examples bringing premium prices.
