Putting Your Classic to Bed: Tips for Winter Storage

As temperatures drop and road salt makes its annual appearance, many classic car owners begin thinking about putting their prized vehicles into hibernation. Proper winter storage involves more than parking the car and throwing on a cover—it’s about preserving history and ensuring your collector vehicle is ready to hit the road again when spring arrives.

The right storage steps depend on how long your car will be idle and the type of vehicle you own. Storing a car for a few months differs from long-term preservation, but for most enthusiasts, winter downtime lasts just a season. With a little preparation, your classic will emerge from its winter slumber in top form, ready for the first cruise or car show of spring.

Before tucking your car away, give it a thorough wash and wax to remove dirt and protect the paint. Clean the interior carefully—small crumbs or traces of moisture can attract unwanted pests. Change the oil, top off fluids, and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent corrosion and keep the gasoline from breaking down while the car sits. Inflate the tires to their recommended pressure, and if possible, store the car on jack stands to prevent flat spots.

Where you store your classic matters, too. A climate-controlled garage is ideal, but if that’s not available, choose a clean, dry, and shaded location. A breathable car cover will shield the finish without trapping moisture. For extra peace of mind, disconnect the battery or connect it to a trickle charger to keep it healthy through the off-season.

A little preparation now goes a long way toward keeping your classic in show-ready condition. Treat winter as a time to admire your car under cover, polish up its story, and tackle those small repairs or restoration projects you’ve been meaning to address.

Here at the museum, we approach storage with the same philosophy—preserving the craftsmanship and stories behind each vehicle so they can continue to educate and inspire future generations. When the snow melts and engines roar back to life, you’ll be glad you gave your automotive treasure the care it deserves.
